  7. The Advanced Planning System provides a suite of strategic, decision-support
  8. manufacturing planning applications and tools, which dramatically extend the
  9. efficiency and planning analysis capabilities of MRP II (manufacturing
  10. resource planning) Systems.
  11. The Advanced Planning System operates on a workstation, acting as a client to
  12. the host-based MRP II system.  The system can be integrated with any
  13. commercially available MRP II system, such as ASK Computer System's ManMan as
  14. well as any in-house developed system.
  15. The Advanced Planning System extracts the key manufacturing planning
  16. information-- the master production schedule (MPS) and the materials and
  17. capacity requirements planning (MRP and CRP)-- from the host-based MRP II
  18. application.  The system can then generate numerous full-scale MRP runs in
  19. seconds on the workstation; a process that normally takes hours on the
  20. host-based system.  With each run, the master planner can apply different
  21. Advanced Planning Applications, such as Engineering Change Analysis or
  22. Schedule Changes, or create a new application with different "What If"
  23. criteria.  The result is an ability to generate multiple manufacturing plans
  24. instantaneously and then select the one that best meets an organization's
  25. strategic needs.
  26. The Advanced Planning System has three components:  an APS Planning Engine,
  27. Advanced Planning Tools, and Advanced Planning Applications.  It allows
  28. companies to execute multiple full-scale MRP runs in seconds, a process that
  29. typically takes hour with existing MRP II systems.
